Bayfield baseball scores No. 11 playoff seed

The Bayfield High School baseball team is headed to the playoffs.

After finishing its regular season with a 16-6 record, Bayfield scored the No. 11 seed for the Class 3A playoffs and will head to Hotchkiss for the Region 6 championships at North Fork High School.

Bayfield will play No. 22 Peak to Peak in the first round. The Peak to Peak Pumas of Lafayette went 13-10 during the regular season, including an 8-7 record in the 3A Metro league to finish sixth.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 6 North Fork (18-5, 12-2 3A Western Slope) will take on No. 27 Strasburg (8-15, 4-12 3A Patriot).

According to CHSAA, Bayfield and Peak to Peak will square off at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The eight regional winners will advance to the state bracket.

The Wolverines will take four batters hitting over .400 into the regional, led by Nic Twedt with a .483 average and a team-high 39 runs scored. Caden Wood is hitting .413 with 13 doubles and 27 runs. Isaac Ross is hitting .426 with 28 runs and 24 RBIs. Noah Chamblee is batting .449 and has hit four home runs and a team-high 32 RBIs. Lance Mazur (. 302), Austin Twedt (. 342) and Devante Candelaria (. 304) are also hitting over .300.

On the mound, Jackson Queen and Wood are both undefeated for BHS. Queen is 6-0 with a 1.47 ERA, and Wood is 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA.

Intermountain League foes Alamosa and Montezuma-Cortez also qualified for the 3A playoffs. The league champion, Alamosa (12-7, 6-2 SWL) was awarded the No. 8 seed and will host No. 25 La Junta (10-13), No. 24 Colorado Academy (16-6) and No. 9 Moffat County (11-10) in the Region 2 championships . The Mean Moose will play La Junta in the first round.

Montezuma-Cortez (11-10) got the No. 23 seed and will play No. 10 Manitou Springs (16-6-1) in the Region 7 championships at Lamar at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

No. 7 Lamar (14-9) will play No. 26 Liberty Common (8-14) on the other side of the bracket.

Eaton (21-2) got the tournament’s No. 1 seed followed by No. 2 University (19-4), No. 3 Lutheran (22-1) and No. 4 Sterling (18-5).
