The wait is over. The Bayfield High School boys baseball team finally played a Class 3A Intermountain League game when the Wolverines traveled to play the Alamosa Mean Moose on Saturday for a doubleheader.
The Wolverines took both games easily, earning 10-run-rule victories against the Mean Moose with wins of 12-0 and 13-3.
“Throughout both games, we kept control,” Bayfield head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “We still have a little ways to go, but we’re quietly figuring out where everyone should be and where we want them.”
Bayfield (9-3, 2-0 IML) scored in all but one inning on the day, and Alamosa (0-12, 0-2 IML) was held to only five hits over two games.
Bayfield senior Zane Phelps was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in during the first game, while Brody McGhehey went 3-for-4 with four RBIs including a home run. Senior pitcher Taed Heydinger earned the win. He allowed only one hit and struck out 11. Bayfield’s barrage of runs caused the game to be called in the sixth inning.
“Any win is good, especially to go on the road and win two games,” Qualls said. “It was important, and it is what we expected to do.”
Heydinger also went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI. Senior Logan Sabinski went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Bayfield faced a total of six Alamosa pitchers.
“We saw a lot of different looks,” Qualls said. “It was good to see them adjust to different pitchers. Some were throwing hard and some throwing slower. It was good to see us adjust to speeds.”
In Game 2, Bayfield closed the game out in the fifth inning. Phelps had another good game with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate. He added two RBIs and a home run. McGhehey went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He also got the win on the mound and had a 3.50 earned-run average while allowing only four hits.
“Both Zane and Brody had good days,” Qualls said.
Senior Kelton McCoy, a recent commit to Division I University of New Mexico, went 2-for-3, Austin Baughman went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Sabinski went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Bayfield will focus its attention for the much-anticipated match up with Durango (7-6, 4-1 4A/5A Southwestern League) when the Wolverines visit the Demons at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Durango High School.
