Bayfield baseball was CHSAA’s road warriors

GREELEY – No team traveled farther for the CHSAA Class 3A state baseball championships than Bayfield High School.

Or more often.

The Wolverines initially made the 342-mile trip to Frederick on Thursday for their first game Friday.

To put that into context, four of the eight teams play in the Greeley area, and Brush isn’t much farther to the northeast.

Then weather delayed Bayfield’s state tournament opener against University and extended it to Saturday before BHS lost 5-4 in extra innings.

CHSAA then pushed the tournament’s remaining games to Monday since Bayfield’s graduation was Sunday.

BHS lost 2-0 Monday to Valley in Greeley.

“It was a tough situation,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “CHSAA definitely didn’t help us out with anything.”

The Wolverines’ five seniors drove back to BHS for the graduation ceremony then came back to Greeley for their second game of the double-elimination tournament.

“The seniors came out, I think we were ready but mostly just tired,” said BHS senior Dillon Hoselton, son of Rick and Stephanie Hoselton.

The rest of the team stayed on the Front Range and waited out the weather.

“Just to say you graduated now and be able to say ‘I’m a high school graduate’ and still be able to play baseball was good,” BHS senior Matthew Knickerbocker said.

Counting the trip back to Bayfield on Monday, the Wolverines traveled 1,422 miles in buses, parents’ cars and a Chevy Suburban.
