Building off a 2-1 showing March 29-30 at the Salida Invitational, Bayfield baseball went back to work Saturday and left La Jara earning 23-7 and 22-4 victories over hosting Centauri.
With both teams getting their 3A Intermountain League work underway, the Wolverines claimed the opening contest thanks in large part to an 11-run outbreak in the top of the fourth inning. The Falcons couldn’t respond in the bottom half of the frame, and BHS prevailed by 15-run mercy rule.
Junior Austin Wilmer (2 IP, 2 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) both started and was credited with the win on the mound, with senior Brandon Anderson (2 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) also seeing time upon the bump.
In the second game, the Wolverines picked up right where they left off and promptly put up nine runs in the top of the first. Centauri countered with one, but by the time the Falcons came up in the home half of the third, the deficit had grown to 19-1.
Junior Cole Wagner (7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 K) threw a four-inning complete game and notched the win.
Offensive statistics for BHS had not been fully tabulated and reported as of press time.
Centauri slipped to 0-2 in league and 4-5 overall with the loss.
Winners of four straight games – including a 21-1 thrashing of 2A Fairplay South Park at the aforementioned tournament, plus a 9-7 win over the hosting 3A Spartans–Bayfield improved to 2-0 IML and 5-6 overall under first-year head coach Clay Miller before traveling to 1A Dove Creek on Thursday and then resuming league play on the 13th with a pair at Alamosa.
