The Bayfield High School baseball team secured a Class 3A Intermountain League championship Saturday when the Wolverines let their bats loose on the Pagosa Springs Pirates for a doubleheader to end the regular season.
Bayfield put up 49 runs while surrendering zero in two games, as the Wolverines won 28-0 and 21-0.
Bayfield (15-4, 8-0 IML) totaled 17 hits in Game 1 to put up a football-like score. Heading into the fifth inning, the Wolverines were up 16-0 on Pagosa Springs (2-14, 0-6 IML) and poured on 12 more runs before the game was called in the bottom of the fifth.
BHS seniors Noah Loutherback and Zane Phelps both went 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Phelps finished with three runs batted in, while Loutherback tallied seven RBIs.
Brody McGhehey earned the win on the mound for Bayfield and went 3-for-6 with four runs and five RBIs at the plate. Kelton McCoy went 2-for-5 with four runs and three RBIs, and Taed Heydinger had two hits and five runs scored with three RBIs. Logan Sabinski added two hits and two RBIs at the No. 9 spot.
Pagosa Springs didn’t help its cause by committing eight errors in Game 1.
In Game 2, Bayfield did more of the same to the Pirates, except the pitching was even more precise. Bayfield threw a combined perfect game with Fred Edwards, McCoy and Phelps throwing on the mound. McCoy received the win and had five strikeouts. Phelps also recorded five strikeouts.
Bayfield had 16 hits in the contest, as the game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning. Loutherback had three hits and three RBIs in Game 2. Phelps finished with five RBIs, and McCoy had four. Sabinski went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Up next for Bayfield is the Class 3A Region 5 Tournament next Saturday with times to be determined.
