Bayfield blows past Montezuma-Cortez in second, third quarters

Kennedy scores 25 to lead Wolverines

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team was able to double its scoring output from a night before.

One afternoon after a 43-36 loss at Alamosa, the Wolverines returned home Saturday to host Montezuma-Cortez in another Class 3A Intermountain League clash.

After BHS (3-3, 1-2 IML) trailed 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines turned up the intensity and outscored the visiting Panthers 26-12 in the second quarter and 20-12 in the third. That was enough for BHS to secure a 71-56 victory.

Landon Kennedy scored a game-high 25 points for BHS, while Hunter Bayles finished with 10. Bayfield utilized its size advantage all game.

Also for BHS, Crosby Edwards finished with eight points, and Kacey Chandler had seven.

John T. Carver led the Panthers (1-6, 0-3 IML) with 20 points. Josh Chupp and Sawyer Smith scored 10 points each.

Montezuma-Cortez will host Durango at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Bayfield also will pay a rivalry game at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at home against Pagosa Springs (3-2, 1-1 IML). BHS fell 57-41 at Pagosa Springs earlier this season.
