Bayfield boys basketball can’t climb past Peak to Peak

Wolverines still fatigued from football-basketbal turnaround

The Wolverines still have weary legs on the basketball court.

Only two weeks removed from a state football championship, fatigue again showed up on the boys basketball floor in a big tournament game in Buena Vista.

Bayfield High School (1-2) couldn’t keep up with Peak to Peak (3-2) in a 71-56 loss in the opening round of the Buena Vista tournament Friday. No BHS player scored in double figures.

“We’re still getting our feet under us,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “We almost double them up in shots inside, but we couldn’t make anything. Youth is showing up a little in places, and overall we’re not shooting the ball well enough to be successful.”

Lehnus said his team went 2-of-11 from behind the 3-point line and shot only 50 percent from the free-throw line despite 26 attempts.

Peak to Peak, a school based in Lafayette, is a tall team that featured 6-foot-11 Brayden Weyer and 6-foot-6, 210-pound Peter Starbuck in the front court.

“We still won the rebounding war despite their size,” Lehnus said. “But most of that was because of all of our put back attempts from all of our missed shots. I think we shot only 28 percent on the night.”

The Wolverines will play tournament host Buena Vista at 4 p.m. Saturday looking to get back to .500 early in the season.
