Bayfield boys basketball defense returns in win against Sheridan

Wolverines lock down Sheridan

Chalk up the first win of the season for the Bayfield boys basketball team.

A day after falling to Grand Valley and only seven days removed from a state football championship, the Wolverines (1-1) took down Sheridan 63-34 with an impressive defensive effort in their final game of the Jefferson Academy tournament in Broomfield.

“We made huge progress one day to the next,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “The defense tightened up better. We had a good game plan, and the boys did a wonderful job executing it.”

Ryan Phelps led the team with 12 points. Brian Mashak added 10, while Hayden Farmer, Hunter Killough and Zane Phelps all scored eight.

Farmer is only a freshman, and Lehnus has been impressed by strong performances from underclassmen across the board.

“It’s exciting to watch their development,” Lehnus said. “It was a decent showing in Denver for us, and that was our goal, establishing ourselves and to continue to compete at a high level.”

BHS will travel to Buena Vista for another tournament against tough teams next weekend.
