Bayfield boys basketball ‘solid’ at Mancos

The Bayfield Wolverines boys basketball team has struggled to find its rhythm so far this season but established its first set of consecutive wins Tuesday.

Bayfield High School took down Mancos 84-51 on the road to improve to 4-6 overall heading into a big Class 3A Intermountain League matchup Friday against Monte Vista.

“Solid performance,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “I continue to see some important development in terms of chemistry and the evolution of everything together.”

Taed Heydinger dropped 22 points for the Wolverines, and Ryan Phelps had a big all-around night with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Hunter Killough also had a strong night with 13 points.

“It’s our first two-game win streak here, and we’re trying to get some momentum built leading into Friday,” Lehnus said. “We know we will be much better prepared in terms of our flow together, our focus and having a stronger constitution toward the game. I think we’ll be ready to go Friday.”
