Downtown Bayfield was awash in purple and gold on Wednesday as fans turned out to celebrate the state championship football team.
It was a short but fun parade, featuring the Bayfield High School dance team, cheer squad, band, drill team, senior class and the members of the football team, carrying their state champion trophy.
"I'm just so proud of them all," said Robin Snooks, a retired Bayfield Elementary teacher who taught several members of the team, which includes her grandson, Dax. "I'm just happy to be a part of it, and proud they are all good kids."
After the parade, students and community members gathered in the BHS gym.
Head Coach Gary Heide thanked the students, staff and community for the support throughout their 13-0 season.
"We appreciate it!" he said. The championship wasn't one game, he added, but a year of work on nights and weekends and a season of hard-fought games.
Cade Killough, who hadn't cut his hair since his sophomore year, had vowed he would get it cut when the team won another championship. Heather Miller of Salon B cut off his bun as the crowd laughed and clapped.
Then everyone in the gym watched a series of highlights and photographs of the season, featuring long passes, amazing catches, and several hits and sacks from Bayfield's powerful defense.
