Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio track and field teams compete in Aztec B&B Invitational

Garand wins three for Durango

Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio’s high school track and field teams headed south over the weekend for the two-day Aztec B&B Invitational in Aztec.

The best finish of them all came from the Durango High School girls’ team, which finished second out of 16 schools. Bayfield’s girls team finished seventh, seven points ahead of Montezuma-Cortez.

On the boys’ side, Bayfield was the local team to top the rest with a fourth-place finish. Durango’s boys team was shorthanded but still managed to finish sixth while Ignacio finished 13th.

Durango

Durango’s Teagan Garand led the team with three wins. She finished first in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter and was part of the Demons’ winning 4x400 relay team. Bekah Moenning was also part of the winning 4x400 relay team and bested the field in the 200-meter. Bree Hawman took third in the shot put in one of many third-place finishes for the Demons. Kathleen Duft finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, and Maggie Wigton also grabbed third in the 3200-meter run.

The Demons’ boys sixth-place finish saw David Moenning take first in the 400-meter with a 50.71 seconds time that moved him into the top 10 in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Class 4A. Benjamin Lachelt had a state qualifying time and second-place finish in the 1,600-meter with Seamus Millett (4th), William Chandler (5th) and Nicholas Turco (6th) finishing right behind. Orion Clay cleared the six-foot mark in the high jump and is now 12th in CHSAA’s Class 4A.

Vicente Jimenez took third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Bayfield

The seventh-place Wolverines girls squad was led by Bridget Goddard, who finished seventh in the 800-meter run.

Amber Johnson crossed the line fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. The Wolverines also had a solid showing in the 4x100 relay team, and Katie Hawkins prevailed in the pole vault.

Sam Westbrook did well throwing for Bayfield’s boys team, as he took second place in the discus. Cash Snooks finished eighth in the pole vault.

Ignacio

Azala Perez finished seventh in the 200-meter dash and ninth in the 100-meter dash. Alana Watts was 14th in the shot put and Rachel Cooper took 35th in the 800-meter run.

The Bobcats’ boys were led to a 13th-place finish by Bryan Gram, who finished seventh in the 400-meter dash and 12th in the long jump. Natoni Cundiff was seventh in the discus throw, and John Valdez took 47th in the 200-meter dash.

Not all of Saturday’s results were available at press time Saturday.
