Bayfield, Durango track and field win in Pueblo

Teams also competed at Ignacio’s Abel Velasquez Invitational

La Plata County high school track and field athletes were dominant over the weekend at the John Tate Challenge Cup in Pueblo and the Abel Velasquez Invitational in Ignacio.

Bayfield High School swept the 20-team Division II field in Pueblo with first place team totals in both the boys and girls competitions. Durango took first in the larger schools’ Division I girls group and the boys finished third.

The BHS boys total of 123 beat second-place Gunnison by 39 points and the girls’ 108.50 won by 27. Individually, the Wolverines set three meet records and broke three school records in the process.

Carl Heide continues to his own school record in the 300-meter hurdles as his newest best mark of 40.19 seconds was good enough for first place and a new meet record. Heide also set a meet record with a first-place effort of 15.64 in the 110-meter high hurdles.

Sam Westbrook’s shot put throw of 51-3 earned the senior second place in the event and set a new school record.

Bayfield’s Sloan Mazur won the 800-meter run in 2:01.55 and Dawson Heide won the high jump clearing 5-10. The Wolverines’ 4x400 relay team of Carl Heide, Gus Roberts, Cody Speece and Ethan Tate took first with a time of 3:39.14.

The BHS 4x800 relay team (Alex Knight, Mazur, Jackson Sibley, Speece) finished second. Brian Mashak also earned second in the 100-meter dash (11.61) and Gus Roberts was second in the 400 in 52.66.

Mashak also made the podium with a 23.28 third-place finish in the 200. Dax Snooks was third in the high hurdles (16.21). Westbrook took third in the discus (143-3) and Ryan Phelps was third in the shot put with a mark of 45-3.

The Bayfield girls were led to victory by Amber Johnson’s two record-breaking performances. Johnson set a new meet record with a first-place run of 47.63 in the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 26.60 set a new school record in the 200 and earned her second place.

Jordan Lanning also had two first-place finishes for Bayfield. Lanning won the 100 hurdles (16.19) and the long jump with a 16-8 mark. Maddi Foutz placed first with a pole vault of 8-0 and the 4x400 team of Claire Belmear, Foutz, Bridget Goddard and Isis Gonzales took first in 4:28.7.

The same relay team took second in the sprint medley relay (1:59.69). Goddard finished second in the 800 (2:33.23) and Tymbree Florian was second in the long jump behind teammate Lanning with a jump of 15-3.75.

Johnson also raced to third with 13.38 in the 100 and 16.87 in the 100 hurdles. The 4x100 team (Belmear, Foutz, Florian, Lanning) was third with a time of 53.36.

Durango

The Demons’ girls took the top spot out of 13 teams in their division with a total of 135. Coronado finished second with 113 and Widefield followed with 103.

Durango had a one-two finish in the 400 as Teagan Garand won in 1:00.62 and Bekah Moenning was next in 1:00.74.

Madeleine Burns clobbered the field in the 3,200-meter run with a winning time of 11:49.81 that was best by 33 seconds. Kathleen Duft won the 300-meter hurdles with a run of 50.51. Duft was third in the 100 hurdles (17.34).

Burns crossed second (5:28.97) and Abby Scott was third (5:36.84) in the 1,600-meter run. DHS freshman Emma Fitzgerald was third in the 800-meter run in 2:29.50 and sophomore Cassandra Blau’s 13.26 was third in the 100-meter dash.

The Demons’ 4x100 team was second (51.91) and the 4x800 team was third (10:47.84).

Durango did well in the shot put event as Alex Poulter’s 32-7 toss was second and Azalea Santillan finished third with 32-5. Santillan placed second in the discus after a throw of 98-7 and Lana Razma took home third place in the long jump with a mark of 16-3.

With 76 points, the Demons boys finished third behind Widefield (121) and Pueblo South (93).

Camden Garland had a first-place pole vault of 11-6.

Paxton Scott’s run of 52.56 was third in the 400-meter dash. Aidan Fitzgerald took third in the 800 with a time of 2:02.76. Harry Steinberg was third in the 1,600 in 4:38.52 and took third in the 3,200 with a finish of 9:59.35. The Demons’ 4x400 team took second place (3:33.03) and the 4x200 team was third (1:33.11).

Abel Velasquez Invitational

Bayfield and Durango also competed with Ignacio at the Bobcats’ Abel Velasquez Invitational.

The Wolverines were led by two first-place finishes from Dylan Hilliker and one from Colton Fine, Wyatt Killinen, Chad Winkler. Hilliker won the 100 in 11.81 and 200 in 24.26. Fine and Winkler won pole vault at 10-7 and Killinen’s 43-2 mark won the shot put. The BHS 4x100 relay team took first and 4x200 was second. Killinen placed third with a 100 time of 11.97.

The Bayfield girls were led by Emily Bauer’s second-place finish of 6-9 in the pole vault. Courtney Bayles also found the podium with a third-place discus throw of 82-6.

The Demons boys were led by a win in the high jump by David Lee. They also had a second-place 4:09.07 effort from the 4x400 relay team of Benjamin Brandt, Clifton Etter, Cole Waddell and Logan Zick.

Luke Tichi finished third with a 3,200 time of 11:22.74. Cole Waddell was third in the 110 hurdles in 18:46 and Nainoa Umbhau took third in the pole vault. The DHS 4x800 team also finished third.

Durango’s Julia Peterson finished second in the 800 in 2:48.11. Saylor Stottlemeyer was third in the 3,200 (13:57.73) and the 4x400 relay team took third in 4:56.09.

Demons sophomore Alyssa McConnell was third in the high jump at 4-6 and fellow sophomore Maya Johnson was third in shot put at 24-7.75.

Ignacio’s boys team was led by a win from Elco Garcia with a 5:06.41 finish in the 1,600-meter dash. Garcia took second in the 3,200 in 11:22.65. The Bobcats also saw Brian Gram take second in the 400-meter dash with a run of 53.86.

Ignacio’s Lea Monroe finished second with a 6-foot pole vault mark. Jaylynn Herrera’s time of 29.93 was third in the 200 and she took fourth in the long jump at 13-5. Kiana Valdez was fourth in the high jump.
