Bayfield dusts depleted Telluride, 55-10

IHS girls not as fortunate vs Dove Creek

Virtually assured a win Tuesday as no fewer than four of the visitors’ leading ladies were absent – some due to International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association event participation – Bayfield trounced Telluride 55-10.

Junior guard Genesis Barrera sank a 3-pointer and totaled seven points in the first quarter as BHS built a 22-3 lead through eight minutes on its home court.

Senior forward/center Alaysia Kremer booked her first four points during the same span, and both would end up in double figures. Kremer totaled 12 points and Barrera a game-high 18. Sophomore Renae Foutz finished with seven, junior Madison Mead six and senior Abria Thayer five.

Junior Lily Lewin drained a first quarter triple for her three points, and senior reserve Cindi Varnell, a regular on assistant coach Jamie Wursten’s junior varsity, received substantial minutes off head coach Lauren Moran’s bench and recorded four points. The 3A Lady Wolverines (4-12, 0-8 3A/4A Intermountain) led 38-5 at halftime and 47-7 beginning the fourth quarter.

Earning her first-ever varsity start, according to THS skipper Chris Murray, sophomore forward/center Fianna Ahern scored four points to lead the 2A Miners (0-15, 0-6 2A/1A San Juan Basin). Sophomore point guard Tjarn Lyons got the guests on the scoreboard with a first quarter trey. Freshman guard Kendal O’Callaghan – also in the starting lineup with regulars Emma Reggiannini, Pella Ward, Summer Armstrong and reserve/spot starter Thea Rommel out – canned her first-ever trey during the final frame.

Murray then took a timeout almost immediately – essentially a curtain call commemorating the achievement.

Up next, Bayfield will resume IML work on Friday, hosting 4A Pagosa Springs (6-13, 4-4 IML). Led by junior Annie O’Donnell’s 12 points and reactivated sophomore Elizabeth Currier’s 10, the Pirates notched a 52-32 home win Tuesday over 2A SJBLers Mancos (10-6 overall).

Lady ‘Cats doubled up

Facing former 2A/1A San Juan Basin League power Dove Creek inside ‘The Dawg House’ on Tuesday, the 3A Ignacio girls fell behind 21-10 after one quarter and couldn’t catch up, losing 58-29.

No Bobcats managed to reach double figures offensively, though senior forward Harmony Reynolds was close with her nine points. Senior guard Laci Brunson knocked down IHS’ only two 3-pointers and totaled eight points. Sophomore guard Marissa Olguin finished with seven points despite going 3-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Going up against the Bulldogs’ vaunted height in the paint, junior center/forward Solymar Cosio was held to two points before fouling out as Ignacio (2-5 IML) dipped to 8-8 overall.

Senior guard Trista Barnett scored eight points in the first quarter, shot 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and totaled 16 points to pace DCHS (now 14-2 overall). Senior center/forward Lexi Gray finished with 14 and junior forward Kylie Gatlin (6-8 FT) 12. Barnett made one of the team’s 3-pointers; sophomore Ralynn Hickman (7 points, all after halftime) nailed the other as the Bulldogs – ranked No. 7 in CHSAANow.com’s Class 1A poll – secured their 12th consecutive win.

Dove Creek then won a 13th in a row the next evening, 78-56, thanks to a dominant fourth quarter in which DCHS held a 20-point edge over 3A Montezuma-Cortez – not how the Panthers (4-10, 2-5 IML) wanted to go into Friday’s league game at IHS.

Bayfield senior Cindi Varnell forces Telluride's Katija Kramer to try a risky overhead pass into the paint during nonleague action Tuesday inside BHS Gymnasium. Coming in off the bench, Varnell received substantial minutes and scored four points in the Wolverines' 55-10 win. (Joel Priest/Special to the Herald)
