Electrified by the sight of senior Tilden Berriman (and others) dog-piling junior Berman Abdallah-Boehm after the latter's 98th-minute, double-overtime winner versus Alamosa last Friday afternoon, the Wolverines were unfortunately short-circuited the next day.
"Double-overtime didn't make life any easier," quipped head coach Chris Zoltowski after a difficult 2-1 road loss at Crested Butte Community School took much of the buzz out of edging the Mean Moose by that margin.
"Tough game, the third match in five days," Zoltowski noted. "I know the boys have a lot of wins left in them; the hard part is over."
Senior Colton Fine, converted a deflected Berriman free kick for Bayfield's lone goal against Crested Butte. Fine had an impressive game against Alamosa, first hustling back to cover goalkeeper Chad Winkler's vacated line, denying AHS' Antonio Esteban a score in the 48th minute, then going airborne in the 76th to again deny the sophomore.
With a 31st-minute goal, he'd also struck first against Alamosa-before the visitors equalized via junior Jose Mateo-Andres' penalty kick.
Senior Michael Hensley and sophomore Chris Myers each netted for CBCS, according to boss Than Acuff.
Up next for the Wolverines (5-3-0, 4-3-0 3A Intermountain) will be a Homecoming Week visit from Kirtland Central at 11 a.m. Saturday. The struggling Broncos, beaten 4-1 at home by Bayfield back on Aug. 26, stood just 1-7-0 overall prior to beginning NMAA District 1-5A work with trips this week to Aztec and Farmington.
And with a loss last Saturday at Class A/4A power Rehoboth Christian, the match at BHS will be KCHS' fourth (all away) in seven days-a potential fatigue factor well-known to Zoltowski and the Wolverines.
"What is nice," he said, "is the week off before Kirtland, then another week off before Crested Butte, finally having some rhythm instead of jamming the season into one week. I'm excited about the second half of the season!"
Bayfield's rematch with CBCS is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
