Coming off a second-place win at the Colorado Future Farmers of America convention earlier this week, students in the chapter at Bayfield High School are holding their annual plant sale for the next two Saturdays to raise money for chapter travel and activities.

Bayfield High School Future Farmers of America Plant Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and May 14 at 800 County Road 501. The greenhouse is located in front of the school near the north entrance.

“I love FFA and all the people I have met around the country,” said Kori Jenkins, who raises champion hogs and took sixth in the state in the livestock judging category.

Payton Montgomery earned a bronze in livestock judging, and Natalie Wright placed ninth. Paige Porter was named bronze individual in the employment skills competition, while Noah Martin took a gold in livestock judging, as well.

Their finishes were strong enough to earn Bayfield FFA second place among 54 teams in the state and qualifies them to attend a national FFA competition later this year.

The group will hold its only fundraiser of the year on Saturday and May 14 at the greenhouse at Bayfield High School.

In addition to growing plants from seeds donated by City Market, the members perform a cost analysis to price the items, which included hanging flower baskets, vegetables and lots of flowers, including pansies and petunias.

“They have to learn what the costs are and how to price plants,” said Bobbi Hanhardt, a teacher at BHS and the club’s adviser.
