The Bayfield Wolverines traveled to Blanding, Utah, for its season opening football game on Friday. Unfortunately for BHS, it had a long ride home after falling to the San Juan Broncos, 34-3.
Bayfield trailed 7-0 after the first quarter and kicked in a field goal in the second quarter but went into halftime trailing, 21-3.
San Juan added 13 points to its lead in the third quarter and held on for the win. The Bronocs passed for 235 yards and three touchdowns in the game, but Bayfield did intercept one pass. The Wolverines also forced and recovered two fumbles in the contest.
Bayfield also was sacked six times and fumbled three times, losing two of the fumbles.
San Juan improved to 2-1 overall with the win, and Bayfield will start 0-1.
On Saturday, Bayfield will host Englewood in its home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Englewood is 0-0-1 after tying Weld Central to start its season, 21-21.
