Bayfield football realigns coaching staff

Bayfield High School football will have some different faces on the sidelines this fall.

Several longtime assistant coaches were not rehired in a staffing shuffle announced earlier this month by Rob Dean, the athletic director at BHS.

Under Coach Gary Heide, the head football coach, Bayfield has made it to the state playoffs for two of the past three seasons.

He has been assisted by two full-pay assistant coaches and four half-pay assistant coaches.

"In order to better utilize the assistant coaching positions, a structural change was made to reduce the number of half pay assistants," Dean said in an email to the Times. "In order to give every 2014 assistant and volunteer coach a fair opportunity to serve as a full time assistant coach for the 2015 season, all assistant coaching positions were put open for applications."

Mike Wnorowski was hired as the defensive coordinator. The interview committee consisted of one parent, one athlete, Coach Heide, and Dean.

Frank Hawkins and Justin Matherson were hired as full-pay assistants, and Mike Wood and Don Funke as half-pay assistants. The interview committee for the assistant coaching positions consisted of two parents, one athlete, Coaches Heide and Wnorowski, and Dean.
