The Bayfield High School football team has grown to enjoy road trips in the state playoffs. The No. 3 seed Wolverines left Bayfield High School shortly before 9 a.m. Friday for a 423-mile trip to Greeley for the CHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs semifinals.
First, the team stopped in Colorado Springs to get in a practice at Harrison High School to prepare for No. 15 Resurrection Christian.
As the team left Bayfield, fans and parents cheered as the charter bus made three laps around the roundabout on County Road 501 before making its way out of town. Fans eagerly awaited the Wolverines’ arrival to the roundabout. Parents wore their jerseys, held banners and rang cowbells and cheered as the team circled.
“We kind of look forward to these road trips now,” Bayfield senior Hunter Killough said. “The coaches have gotten it so that the community has gotten us nice charter buses, and we’re staying in nice hotels now. Some guys really like it.
“Of course, we love playing at home more, but this isn’t so bad. We’re used to it.”
Bayfield is in the semifinals for the fifth time in seven years and is seeking its second state title in the last three years. A win Saturday would guarantee the Wolverines will host either No. 8 Eaton or No. 4 La Junta in next week’s state championship game. The Wolverines have two football state titles in school history.
Saturday’s game will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Weld County District 6 Stadium at Northridge High School in Greeley.
