Bayfield gets home-field advantage

Wolverines win 16 events at the Abel Velasquez Invitational

Ignacio High School may have been the host team for the Abel Velasquez Invitational, but Wolverine Country Stadium gave Bayfield High School the home-field advantage.

The Wolverines won 16 events Saturday in Bayfield to take the girls team championship with 133 points, and they finished second on the boys side with 146.

“We had some really outstanding performances,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “We were kind of hampered by prom (Saturday night); we lost a few toward the end of the day.”

Eva-Lou Edwards finished first in the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 35.86 seconds, which was 21 seconds in front of her closest competitor.

She also won the 3,200-meter run in 11:46.7, also 21 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Morgan Allred, Trista Hooley, Jessie Roukema and Ashlyn Schulder ran a 54.16 4x100-meter relay to finish first.

The girls 4x200-meter team of Trista Hooley, Amber Johnson, Martina Moreno and Roukema also win, finishing in 1:59.59.

Aubree Lorenzen won the 800-meter run in 2:40.61, beating BHS freshman Madeleine Foutz, who finished second at 2:48.09.

Roukema also won the high jump at 5-01.

Brittany Hunter finished first in the pole vault at 8-00.

The Wolverines’ 800-meter sprint medley relay of Allred, Hooley, Brittany Hunter and Amber Johnson finished first at 2:00.59.

On the boys side, BHS freshman Brian Mashak finished first in the boys 100-meter dash at 11.95 seconds, while John Arnold was right behind him in second and was given the same time.

Nate Tate won the boys 200-meter dash at 24.01 seconds.

The Wolverines’ boys 4x100-meter relay team of John Arnold, Gabe Kaufmann, Mashak and Tate won in 44.96 seconds, while the 4x200-meter relay team of Kaufmann, Mashak, Zach Phelps and Tate finished first in 1:34.69.

Aubry Brown won the boys discus with a 137-foot, 5-inch throw.

Arnold won the boys shot put at 42-6.

Ignacio High School

A full-strength Ignacio team finished third in the boys team standings with 71 points and eighth in the girls standings with 16.

Christian Knoll won the 400-meter dash in 53.18 seconds, while Wyatt Hayes was right behind him in second at 53.39.

Hayes got his first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 0.75 inches.

The IHS 4x100-meter relay team of Hayes, Knoll, Blaine Mickey and Mike Perez finished second at 46.62 seconds.

Keith Joosten finished second in the boys triple jump at 36-7.

Amya Bison came in second place in the girls long jump at 14-04.5 in the Bobcats’ home event.

Durango High School

Even with some of its top competitors in Los Angeles for the Arcadia Invitational, Durango still managed to win the boys title with 150 points and finish third in the girls standings with 93.

Zeb Soignier won the boys 110-meter hurdles in 17.59 seconds.

Benjamin Lachelt finished first in the boys 1,600-meter run at 4:53.64.

Joe Logan edged Mancos’ Ro Paschal for the boys 800-meter run title, winning in 2:10.01 over Paschal’s 2:10.29.

John Lee finished first in the boys triple jump at 37-11.25.

Alle McKown came in second in the girls 3,200-meter run at 14:07.82.

Danica Dudley finished second in the girls high jump at 4-09.

Breann Hawman came in second in the girls shot put at 31-11.5.
