Bayfield girls basketball struggles to score against Centauri

Wolverines were held scoreless in 2nd half

The Centauri High School girls basketball team has been a dominant force in the Class 3A Intermountain League all season, and nothing changed from that in a 64-17 league tournament semifinal game against Bayfield on Friday in Alamosa.

The top-seeded Falcons (19-1) held the No. 4 Wolverines (7-14) to two points in the first quarter and had a 14-2 advantage heading to the second stanza.

Bayfield got its offense going a bit in the second and scored 15 points to head into halftime down 38-17. But the Wolverines couldn’t find the basket in the second half and were held scoreless during the final 16 minutes of action.

Tymbree Florian led the Wolverines with seven points, and Tiara Christiansen, Jordan Lanning, Halle Loveday and Macee Schultz added two points each.

Centauri’s Kyree Huffaker led the Falcons with 13 points, Ember Canty added 10 points, and Mia Garcia and Caroline Van Berkum chipped in nine points apiece.

The Falcons will face No. 2 Pagosa Springs in the tournament’s championship game. Behind a dominant first half, Pagosa Springs (17-3) beat No. 3 Alamosa (13-8) 51-26 in the other semifinal game. The Pirates led 29-9 at halftime.

Bayfield will meet the Mean Moose of Alamosa in the third-place game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Alamosa High School.

BHS head coach Josh Kitchen was not available for comment.
