Bayfield girls blank Alamosa on road, 1-0

Duran nets winner, Millard blocks goal attempt

Junior Kailee Millard may have only needed to make three saves Tuesday afternoon, but one made the difference.

The lack of scoring attempts are truly an indication Alamosa, even on its own turf, wasn't quite the Alamosa which had won the last two 3A Southwestern League championships.

"It's just about those five seconds.." a relieved Coach Jen Zelinski said, returning from the San Luis Valley.

Able to redirect a Mean Moose shot up and off her crossbar, Millard may have conceded a corner kick but ultimately preserved a morale-boosting, 1-0 road shutout for Bayfield in its first competition after Spring Break.

Set up by junior Makenna Cowan, senior Maddy Duran scored in the 10th minute. The Wolverines (5-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 SWL) kept Alamosa (3-5, 1-4) at bay with an estimated 30 total attempts. Again, another hint the Moose might lack the juice to three-peat atop the standings in '16.

"Those two are working really well together," Zelinski said of the scoring connection, "and it's good to know that we can win without playing our best."

Up next, BHS travels to Gunnison for a 4 p.m. neutral-ground rematch today against provisional circuit members Crested Butte Community School. The BHS girls then have a lengthy pause prior to visiting Ignacio on April 19.

IGNACIO RESUMING: Ignacio (0-3, 0-3) will get restarted, post-break, this afternoon at Alamosa, then play at Center (0-5-1, 0-4-1) tomorrow. Kickoff times, respectively, are set for 4 p.m. and 11 a.m.
