The Bayfield girls lost the jump ball Tuesday evening, surrendering an easy layup and going down 2-0 to a Ouray squad seeking its first win of the season. The Trojans’ momentum was short-lived, as Bayfield cruised to a dominant 47-22 win to improve its record to 5-9 overall (0-4 in Intermountain League play). OHS fell to 0-13 and 0-4 in the San Juan Basin League.
Bayfield’s dominance was largely thanks to senior guard Renae Foutz. Scoring seven two-pointers plus one three-pointer, she accounted for 17 first-quarter points, while sophomore guard Kimball Anderson sank one three and totaled the other five points as the Wolverines rapidly built up a 22-8 lead through the first quarter.
Knocking down another 3-pointer and making one of two free throws during the second quarter, Foutz added another 10 points to increase her total to 27 at halftime. BHS ended the first half up 35-10 and the third quarter up 42-16. Foutz scored four more in the third quarter and five in the fourth as BHS cruised to its second home win of the season.
All told, Foutz finished with two 3-pointers, made two of four free throws and totaled 36 points. Sophomore guard Charlotte Vander Ploeg totaled a team-high 11 points for Ouray.
Bayfield played Friday evening, resuming IML play at home versus Pagosa Springs. Extending its current winning streak to five via a 54-34 road win Tuesday evening at nonleague 2A Del Norte, Pagosa Springs will arrive standing 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the league.
