AZTEC—Standing out for having the shortest hair on the court, Brooke Calvert stood out even more Thursday for having the longest range on the court.

Confidently breaking open the interstate date with visiting Bayfield, via two second-quarter three-pointers, the Aztec senior cashed two more in the third as she racked up a game-high 18 points, helping the Tigers roll 51-23 inside Lillywhite Gymnasium.

Freshman Camilla Dominguez (7 points) and senior McKenzie Klinger (5) each sank a trey during the initial eight minutes as AHS (2-5 overall, 0-0 NMAA Dist. 1-4A) constructed a 14-2 lead the Wolverines couldn’t cut down enough to remain in contention.

Contributing nine points, junior Nika McKenzie nearly reached double figures offensively as nine different players scored for boss Bill McLaughlin. Towering over most of her opposition, sophomore post Bailey Clarence booked a conservative four points—all during the first quarter.

Trailing 25-5 at intermission, then 44-15 entering the fourth and final frame, Bayfield (2-2, 0-0 CHSAA 3A/4A Intermountain) got 10 points from sophomore Renae Foutz and eight from senior Genesis Barrera. Senior Abria Thayer logged four points and junior Madison Mead one, but the Wolverines’ collective 11-of-28 work from the free-throw line prevented the final margin from being closer.

BHS was also scheduled to host 2A Blanding, Utah, San Juan (2-3, 0-0 UHSAA Region 19) Saturday afternoon while Aztec welcomed non-district Grants (1-5, 0-0 Dist. 5-4A).
