Bayfield girls basketball wants to start the second part of its season strong. The Wolverines went 3-3 before winter break, a record they hope to improve on heading into 2025.
The Wolverines’ first game of the new year will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Aztec. After winning two of three contests at their own Rumble in The Jungle tournament, Dec. 19-21, Aztec stood at a sturdy 6-4 overall before their Tuesday restart at 10-2 Farmington. Results were unavailable at press time.
Bayfield, meanwhile, will enter AHS’ Lillywhite Gymnasium at a more unassuming 3-3 overall but with confidence to build upon after pulling out one win – and very nearly a second – at Rye, Colorado’s three-day Holiday Classic, held the same weekend as the Rumble.
At the Holiday Classic, Bayfield placed seventh, recording one win and two losses.
Bayfield’s first loss came against Rangely, who cruised to a 55-24 win. In Bayfield’s matchup against Greeley-based Frontier Academy, sophomore star Vivien Clance recorded 17 points, nine rebounds and a whopping 10 steals, but the Wolverines fell 42-38.
Against PCHS, the Wolverines broke out to a 20-7 lead after one quarter, holding that lead to go into halftime up 26-10. A strong third quarter helped BHS go into the fourth quarter up 42-13. Senior Renae Foutz scored 20 points and sophomore Vivien Clance 12, while sophomore Kimball Anderson and freshman Kieley White Thunder each scored seven.
BAYFIELD BOYS BACK IN ACTION: Getting an earlier jump on the second half of the ’24-25 season, Bayfield’s boys (2-3 overall) were to visit Shiprock, New Mexico, on Tuesday night, Jan. 7, with the Chieftains (2-8 overall) hoping to end an eight-game slide. Figures from BHS’ descent into the Chieftain Pit were unavailable at press time.
