Bayfield girls see more improvement, but another ‘L’

Monte Vista’s Mariah Barbosa dribbled around Jade Sanders, as Sanders tried to steal the ball Friday.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team scored first Friday – a first this season, according to head coach Bri Simbeck. But the Wolverines fell short again, 52-35 at home against Monte Vista to remain winless.

“We played a little bit better but still lost,” Simbeck said. “We came out and scored the first points of game. We haven’t done that all season as far as I know. We won the first quarter and were down by 2 at halftime, but the third quarter killed us. We came on strong in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. It was a good effort. I’m confident that when we’re able to play a full game, we’ll be competitive.”

Junior Aspen Pinnecoose led the Wolverines with 12 points despite being plagued by foul trouble, Simbeck said. Senior Jessie Roukema added 10 points for BHS.

“It was more of a team effort – more team scoring and less missed free throws,” Simbeck said.

BHS is at Montezuma-Cortez at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
