Jefferson Academy’s year-round chemistry showed against the Bayfield High School girl soccer team Saturday.
The No. 3 Jaguars picked apart the No. 14 Wolverines 6-1 in the second round of the CHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
Four of their six goals were assisted, and six different Jaguars scored.
“You can tell they play year-round together,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “They pass really well move really well.”
The Wolverines didn’t fold, though.
BHS senior Andrea Zelinski delivered a long throw in to junior teammate Maddy Duran with less than 10 minutes left. She turned on it from outside the 18-yard box on the right side to score.
“It was a rocket shot. It was beautiful,” coach Zelinski said. “There was no way that keeper was going to save it.”
Even with the score, coach Zelinski lauded the play of her keeper, Kailee Millard. She saved one of Jefferson Academy’s two penalty kicks.
“She made some huge saves,” coach Zeliski said. “She definitely stood out.”
The Wolverines will lose four seniors – Koya Maniss, Meaghan Mooney, Emily Popke and Andrea Zelinski – to graduation but bring back plenty of talent on next year’s roster.
Duran will return along with Millard, and all of the Wolverines who come back will have seen the second round of the state tournament.
“They were tired from (Friday) night, but they gave it everything they had. They worked really hard in the whole game,” coach Zelinski said. “We will be back.”
