Bayfield girls soccer gets 2-1 win over Ridgway

In chilly conditions, the Bayfield High School girls soccer team got two goals from senior Maddy Duran to lead the Wolverines past the Ridgway Demons, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Bayfield (2-1-1, 2-0-1 3A Region 5) controlled most of the game with Duran scoring in the 23rd minute off a header from a perfect corner kick by Makenna Cowen for the assist.

In the 27th minute, Duran scored again from an assist by Taylor Morris to go up 2-0 with the game in hand.

“We were trying to attack more, we have a lot of girls with speed and talent, and girls who can get good shots,” said Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Bayfield had more corner kicks than Ridgway by way of 8-2.

“It was a little tougher defensively was tough, but I’m happy with the way that we played,” said Zelinski.

Even though Ridgway (3-1-1, 2-1-1 3A Region 5) was down two goals, the Demons didn’t give up. In the 53rd minute, Emma Haaland received a pass from Elle Martin for a late-match goal.

Bayfield had more total shots than Ridgway, 16-9. The Wolverines also had more shots on goal with a 6-5 advantage.

Bayfield goalie Kailee Millard had four saves, and Samantha Medina had five saves for Ridgway.
