The Bayfield High School girls soccer team is off to a great start in 2018.
The Wolverines opened the season Saturday with a 7-0 blitzing of Center, then rallied from an early deficit to beat Pagosa Springs 5-3 on Tuesday in Pagosa Springs.
“Going out, we were a little cautious. Pagosa is always tough to beat, especially at home,” BHS head coach Jen Moore said. “But the girls went out there pumped to play. They’ve been pumped all season and excited to play. We got down first and it says a lot about the girls’ character to not get down after getting a goal scored on them, then coming back and winning.”
The Pirates (0-1) scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but the attack of the Wolverines was too much to handle. The Wolverines (2-0) spread the ball around to find holes in Pagosa Springs’ defense and saw five different players notch a goal.
Misty Helton scored once, Savannah Kaufman had a goal and two assists, Halle Loveday recorded a goal, and Malaree Matlock and Sophie Turner headed in a goal each on corner kicks. Taelor Higgins and Peri Milner also had an assists each, and Lana McKee got the win in goal.
“Pagosa is always super aggressive and working really hard. They’re tough to outhustle, but the girls knew that coming in and outhustled them for most of the game,” Moore said. “They’re definitely not a bad team, but I think we came out with more energy and I think we had more talent and skill. The girls came out ready to play and all played for each other, supported each other and they all played really well.”
Against Center, Kaufmann had with three goals and two assists. Helton and Loveday added a goal and an assists each. Madi McInroy and Turner scored a goal each and Caibri Schaefer had an assist in the win.
The Wolverines will be back on the road this weekend with a game Friday at Manitou Springs (0-0) and Saturday at St. Mary’s (0-0) in Colorado Springs.
“These are two really tough teams we could play in the playoffs, and that’s why we want to play them,” Moore said. “We’re going to go out and work hard and they’re going to make us better.”
