The Bayfield High School girls soccer team scored in bunches under the lights Tuesday night at Ignacio, shutting out the Pine River rival Bobcats 9-0.
Maddy Duran, a senior, scored the game’s first four goals for Bayfield (4-1-1, 4-0-1 3A Region 5 League), scoring the first goal of the game in the 12th minute. Duran then returned with goals in the 18th, 31st and 33rd minutes. The last goal Duran scored was assisted by Sophie Turner.
“They all played really well,” Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We didn’t have a game in a week in a half, so the girls were pumped up to play again. I wanted to keep them positive and upbeat. All the girls came out and wanted to score.”
Bryannah Isiordia scored in the 38th minute to move the score to 5-0 at halftime.
With two players unavailable at goalkeeper, Bayfield’s Savannah Kaufmann got the call in net in the first half. When the second half came around, Kaufmann moved to the field and Isiordia subbed at goalkeeper.
“Isiordia is an all-around good athlete. She’s never had gloves on her before, but she’s not afraid,” Zelinski said. “She has the sweeper mentality; she’s not afraid to dive.”
As soon as Isiordia guarded the goal, she began making saves. She finished the game with two.
Kaufmann found a scoring rhythm after moving to the field. She scored in the 69th minute with an assist from Makenna Cowen.
Misty Helton scored in the 76th minute, and Cowen added a goal of her own on a free kick in the 77th minute to cap off the night.
“If they could play like that every game, they’d dominate league,” Zelinski said. “With Ignacio, they all wanted to score. The passing was great with a lot of give-and-goes. The unselfishness of the team, her first thought is to pass not to shoot, It’s great to see girls want to pass the ball. It was a great first game back.”
Bayfield had 45 shots total with 28 fired on goal. The Wolverines also had six corner kicks and held Ignacio (0-7, 0-7 2A Region 4) was held with none.
Bayfield will be at home at 4 p.m. Friday to host Pagosa Springs.
