The Bayfield High School girls soccer team dominated its effort against the visiting Telluride Miners, but came away with a tie.
Telluride’s Justus Tudor put the Miners up 1-0 in the 55th minute, but Bayfield’s Savannah Kaufmann was able to salvage the match by scoring a late 74th minute goal to notch the game, 1-1. It stayed tied througout two overtimes.
“It’s still better than a loss,” said Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “The girls were able to keep their composure and work hard to get that goal. We got tired at the toward the end, I’m proud of the way that they played.”
Bayfield (2-1, 2-0 3A Region 5) dominated the first half, and relatively the whole game. The Wolverines had 25 shots total and 15 shots on goal while Telluride (4-1, 3-1) could only muster 11 shots and six shots on goal.
Miners goalkeeper Whitney Wells had 16 saves on the day while Bayfield’s Kailee Millard had seven.
“They have grit and they’re not afraid to keep trying and keep taking risks and put their bodies on the line,” said Zelinski.
Bayfield will be up next against Ridgway at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
“I expect us to do well, we have to come out and play our game,” said Zelinski.
