Bayfield Heritage Day and Sheep Trailing has had several years when the weather was dicey, but on Sept. 30 in our 18th year, rain and lightning shut us down. The Heritage Day organizing committee has offered to refund vendor fees or credit them for next year.
But the Sept. 29 Heritage Day Kickoff beef brisket dinner and performance by the Bar D Wranglers was a great success. Karl Herr's band Agave played an excellent set of songs before and during the meal. Proceeds support operation and maintenance of the Heritage Society Museum on Mill Street, keeping valley history and pioneer life alive.
The Brown family sheep did come through Saturday morning on the Buck Highway, including one blue ewe and a red one. They determined the winners in the Pine River Centennial Rotary Club's Blue Ewe raffle. La Plata County resident Carl Craig won the $500, and Washington state resident Tara Smith won the $250. A big thank you goes to the business sponsors of those prizes: First National Bank of Durango, Pine River Chiropractic and Bayfield Mini Merc. With their support, all ticket revenue can go to the club's community service projects.
