The Bayfield High School cheer squad placed 14 out of 21 teams in the USA Spirit Nationals in the co-ed intermediate division in Anaheim, California, on Friday. Only the top seven advanced to the finals on Saturday.
“The whole thing was an amazing opportunity,” said head coach Annette French, who is proud of the team’s performance. “The team proved they can compete at this capacity.”
She said a few athletes had to fill in at new positions because two teammates couldn’t make the competition because of basketball season. The team scored an 89.9.
French said captain and senior Eli Monyek stood out in the competition and was a great leader throughout the experience. He has been on the team for all four years and this was the first time he was able to compete at nationals.
