Bayfield High School girls soccer comes up short at Ridgway

Early lead evaporates in tough weather conditions

Bayfield High School’s girls soccer team played through snowy conditions Friday, but came up on the short end of a 2-1 match at Ridgway.

Savannah Kaufmann scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 11th minute to gave the Wolverines an early lead. Makenna Cowen had the assist on the lone BHS (5-8, 3-4 3A Region 5) goal, but the momentum took a turn late in the first half.

Ridgway’s Emma Gould evened the match with a goal in the 36th minute and the teams were tied 1-1 as they tried to warm up at halftime.

Lana McKee was sharp in the net for the Wolverines as she made 14 stops to keep her team in the game. She couldn’t stop them all, though, as the harsh elements may have cost Bayfield the match as Ridgway (8-3, 6-1 2A Region 4) got a fortunate break in the 53rd minute.

Gould and her Ridgway teammates created havoc in front of the net as a shot deflected off of BHS’ Misty Helton and skipped toward the BHS keeper. The moisture and poor footing made it tough of McKee who couldn’t get control of the ball before it inched past the goal line for the decisive goal.

Bayfield will try to bounce back with an 11 a.m. Saturday matchup at Telluride.
