Bayfield High School volleyball sweeps Piedra Vista

Wolverines storm back from third-set deficit

The Bayfield High School volleyball team stormed back from an eight-point deficit in the third set to cap off a sweep over Piedra Vista Thursday night at BHS.

The Wolverines (14-4, 8-2 3A Intermountain League) claimed the 3-0 win, 29-27, 25-16 and 25-22. With the win, Bayfield improved to 4-0 at home.

Bayfield was led by Lana McKee, who recorded a team-high 22 digs against the Panthers (6-12, 1-5 NM 5A District 2), and their pair of formidable junior outside hitters, Kacee Moore and Bailey Rasmussen. Mavis Edwards and Melissa Roberts had eight kills apiece, while Brooke Merchant and Annie Fusco each added six. Roberts also added four blocks.

In the third set, the Wolverines trailed 18-10 but clawed back on a 9-1 run, and tied the match at 19. The Wolverines then went on another mini rally to tie the match at 22. Macee Schulz played a crucial role down the stretch, as she recorded two blocks in the decisive game.

Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz was proud of her team’s fight late in the match, and said the team will have a much-deserved break this weekend.

“We are looking forward to a mental break this weekend as we are off Saturday and Sunday,” Foutz said. “This will be the first weekend since August to have a full weekend of rest. We have a big schedule next week, and we would like to be refreshed for it.”

The Wolverines will go for a perfect record at home when they host Durango (11-5, 5-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at BHS. BHS will close out the regular season at the Palmer Ridge Tournament on Nov. 2.
