The Bayfield High School volleyball team put together its best match of the season to date, as the Wolverines upended Class 3A No. 3 Alamosa on Saturday at Bayfield High School in four sets.
The Wolverines (13-4, 8-2 3A Intermountain League) topped the Mean Moose, 25-11, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-22.
Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz was impressed with the team’s effort.
“Everybody contribute and it was a huge team win all the way,” Foutz said. “I’ve really got to give credit to all the kids for putting their A-game on the floor. I thought we outserved them, and with a few of their passers that were susceptible, we focused on that and serving to the deep court. We slowed down their offense, which was the goal all week.”
The win was also huge in the context of the Wolverines’ season, as the Mean Moose (20-3, 9-1 IML) beat BHS in four sets three weeks ago in Alamosa.
Bayfield’s middles combined for 20 kills in the win. Mavis Edwards was all over the court once again for the Wolverines, as she recorded 123 digs, four services aces, six kills and three blocks. Lana McKee had 10 digs and four service aces, while Meghan Youngblood chipped in 20 assists. Sophomore Annie Fusco led the Wolverines with 14 kills, six blocks and hit .400 on her attack efficiency. Melissa Robers added six kills and three blocks.
It was the final match of the regular season for Alamosa, while the Wolverines still have two weeks of action, as they will play six matches during the home stretch.
“Alamosa is a really good team, but we worked really hard everywhere today,” Foutz said. “We responded well through our offensive plays, we passed well under pressure and our serving location was excellent.”
With plenty of volleyball left for the Wolverines, Foutz believes the win will be a huge confidence booster, and hopes to close the season strong.
“We put a lot of our matches on the back end of the schedule,” Foutz said. “It’s building now, and we’re getting into crunch time. We’ve got some tough matches as we head toward regionals, but today was a big win for us, no doubt.”
The Wolverines will play Piedra Vista (5-10, 1-4 5A District 2) at 6 p.m. Thursday at BHS.
