As a result of a project that began in the early 2000s, Bayfield now has high-speed connectivity.
The project, built with the cooperation of FastTrack Communications and La Plata Electric Association, has benefited the Bayfield School District in providing increased bandwidth to schools.
Bill Bishop, technology director with the Bayfield school district, gushed about the opportunities students will now have.
“The new connectivity has allowed us to expand in both curriculum and infrastructure,” Bishop said in a news release Tuesday from LPEA and FastTrack. “We are now able to support 15 new mobile labs and offer distance-learning opportunities to provide additional course offerings to our students. With so many resources online, adequate bandwidth was a must, and now we have it.”
Greg Munro, the electric association’s CEO, acknowledged how the high-speed connectivity will improve Bayfield businesses and the overall economy.
“As our construction crews built our line, we were able to string FastTrack’s fiber, as well,” he said in the news release. “This now not only helps the school district, but it opens tremendous opportunities for existing businesses and future economic development for the town. Every business needs access to high-speed connectivity these days.”
FastTrack Communications, headquartered in Durango, was founded by LPEA and Empire Electric Association. The company offers Internet access, point-to-point data solutions and voice services to local businesses.
