The Bayfield High School boys basketball team defended its home court Friday against Durango in the Four Corners Southwest Classic. The Wolverines sank a free throw with four seconds left in the game to win it 52-51.

With five seconds left in the game, A.J. Folk sank a free throw to tie the contest at 51-51. Folk missed the second free throw, and Lincoln Clay fouled out on the rebound, sending Caden Wood to the line for Bayfield. Wood hit 1-of-2 to give BHS the late lead. His miss, however, bounced right back in his hands, forcing Durango to foul again with :01 left. The free throws missed, and Tyler Harms put up a desperation full-court shot, but it was off-target.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first and extended it to 19-6 before Durango started to rally. The Demons went into halftime trailing 24-20 and the tied the game at 36-36 heading into the fourth.

Wood scored 13 points to lead Bayfield, followed by Lincoln Williams and Lance Mazuer with nine and Isaac Ross with seven.

Luke Wesley scored 14 to lead Durango. Clay added 13, Harms scored seven, and Folk added six. The Demons were also without five players for the contest.

In the night’s first game, Ignacio beat Montezuma-Cortez 59-48. The teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter, but Ignacio knocked down five 3-pointers in the second to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.

Ignacio extended its lead to 43-33 in the third and eventually posted a double-digit win. Gabe Tucson and Phillip Quintana both scored 18 points to lead Ignacio. Devante Montoya and Dylan McCaw both chipped in eight.

For Cortez, J.T. Carver sank three 3s to finish with 17 points. Austin Wood added 10, Gabe Crowley scored seven, and Trinidad McDonnell and Miles Frost both scored six.

The teams will all be back in action on Saturday. Durango will play Cortez at 1 pm. and then Ignacio will play Bayfield afterwards.
