Pine River Library will host a Self Defense 101 class from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.
Self-defense skills can help people feel more safe, prepared and confident in their daily lives. The course for ages 13 and older will be taught by Shiann Swapp, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor at the Durango Martial Arts Academy.
Swapp will be teaching the course based on a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu self-defense program. Jiu Jitsu employs leverage, technique and timing so almost anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can use these techniques and make them work against larger opponents. She will be focusing on basic ground defense (how to defend yourself if you get knocked to the ground), grip breaking and grip diverting, as well as some other basic techniques like escaping chokeholds.
The course is free, but pre-registration is required. Donations are welcome. Call or stop by the library information desk to sign up, or register online at https://forms.gle/w7dAN2UPbx7FesNj8.
