Derek Smith, music director at Bayfield High School, is one of 42 recipients of the 2017 Boettcher Foundation Teacher Recognition Award.
Lenka Doskocil, a Boettcher scholar and 2017 BHS graduate, selected Smith to receive the award.
A ceremony was held Saturday at Denver Botanic Gardens, and Smith also receives a $1,000 grant for an educational program or project. This is the 26th year the foundation has awarded the grants.
Doskocil will start her studies at Colorado State University this month.
“Listening to the incredible stories of these students and their inspirational teachers has affirmed to me that I am indeed suitably employed in the best job in the world,” Smith wrote on his Facebook page.
