For a small town, Bayfield paid a large price during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Three men who were graduates of Bayfield High School were killed on the USS Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941.
At noon Thursday, American Legion Post 143 in Bayfield will honor the three men: Ralph Fife, Eugene Barry and Harold Carmack. Their descendants have been invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at the new Veterans Memorial in the Pine River Cemetery.
At the Pine River Valley Historical Society Museum, the three men also are remembered. Berry and Carmack joined the Navy under the buddy program in 1940 and both were firemen second-class. Fife was a seaman first-class.
There will be comments about the importance of Pearl Harbor Day in American history, along with a rendition of “Taps” and a lowering of the flags at the memorial. Refreshments will be served.
