Bayfield picks up the intensity but not the ‘W’

A few key turnovers, a couple missed shot, a couple fouls.

Small details here and there sent the Bayfield High School boys basketball team to its second consecutive loss Tuesday at Monte Vista.

The Wolverines were outscored 15-9 in the fourth quarter and lost 54-51.

“We had a couple good looks to tie it, had two 3s open, good looks, just didn’t go down prior to that,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “We had a chance to finish it out.”

Instead, BHS (7-3, 0-2 Intermountain League) let a seven-point halftime lead slip away on the road.

The Wolverines held Monte Vista (8-3, 2-0 IML) to four points in the first quarter. They allowed more than 14 in every other quarter.

“I was pleased with our intensity and our effort, unlike the other night at Alamosa,” Lehnus said. “We came out ready to play.”

Conner Kennedy led BHS with 14 points, and Dillon Hoselton had 12 for the Wolverines.

BHS can break the losing streak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Sargent.

“While we didn’t get the ‘W,’ there was progress with learning what it takes at the next level,” Lehnus said. “There’s a lot more games to be played.”
