The Dave Foster era got off to a rough start for the Bayfield High School boys soccer team.
Granted, the Wolverines weren’t exactly picking on an opponent its own size.
Class 3A BHS lost its season opener 7-0 on Tuesday at Class 4A Montezuma-Cortez, the program’s first under its new head coach.
It was a very different result from last season’s 1-1 tie, but Bayfield lost nine seniors from last year’s team, which finished 3-9-2.
“We’re rebuilding, so it was a great game for us to get used to our organization and start to build team chemistry,” Foster said.
Bayfield’s originally scheduled game against Durango High School’s junior varsity team Thursday was canceled, so the Wolverines’ next game will be their home opener against Alamosa at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
Foster wants his team to work on understanding their positions and their roles until then.
“This team’s not going to change over night,” said Foster, who replaced Terry Spriggs this season at the Wolverines’ helm. “We just need to keep a positive attitude and not give up hope after a loss to Cortez.”
