Bayfield resident pokes fun at run on toilet paper

Residents find giant roll ‘hilarious’

Missy Sarnow, a Bayfield resident, is the creator of the giant toilet paper roll decorating Bayfield Parkway.

“People have just thought it was hilarious,” Sarnow said. “I’ve seen a lot of people stop at the corner and take a picture.”

The giant bathroom-inspired creation pokes fun at the toilet paper fiasco marking the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. In early March, the nation did not have clear information about the virus, what to expect or whether fighting it would mean sudden quarantine orders. Amid the confusion, toilet paper, of all things, became one of the hot-ticket items for home stockpiles.

“When the whole toilet paper fiasco started happening I was just so confused as to what was going on,” Sarnow said.

She soon realized it was the perfect time to roll out a new look for the oft-decorated, 10-foot-high stump in front of Bayfield Physical Therapy. She used paint cans for smaller rolls, and combined foam, a roll of fence, plastic tablecloths and boards to create the giant roll.

“I’m a big believer in not fearing and not worrying. ... There’s a verse: ‘My God shall supply all my needs,’” she said. “It struck me as really funny, so I put all of that up there with a huge roll of toilet paper on top.”
