Amy Lyons, the finance director at the Bayfield School District, will serve as the interim superintendent for the 2017-2018 school year.
Gary Martinez has been hired as the district's new finance director and has held a similar position for the Aztec School District for 10 years.
Lyons was appointed to the position at the June 13 board meeting. Superintendent Troy Zabel announced in he is taking a medical leave, effective June 30, after being diagnosed with cancer in 2016.
Lyons has been the district's finance director since January of 2005, "and during the last year has performed many functions of the superintendent in addition to her duties with the finance department," the school board members wrote in a press release. "We are confident that Ms. Lyons will do a great job continuing all of the work that the district is engaged in, with our students always as the foremost focus for that work.
Zabel is continuing to consult with the district and might advise the board during its superintendent search. Lyons said she might apply for the position.
