Moving day is coming to the Bayfield School District.
Bayfield Elementary School's last day of school is May 18, a week earlier than students at the middle school and high school. All rooms have to packed up and ready to move that day, as well, said Marty Zwisler, the district owner's representative for the construction of the new Bayfield Intermediate School and the renovation of BES. He spoke at the Bayfield School Board meeting on Tuesday.
"The quicker we get out of the elementary school building so we can turn it over to FCI...the better off we're going to be," Zwisler said, referring to FCI Constructors, the general contractor.
On Monday, May 21, "we intend to completely vacate that building," Zwisler said of BES, which will be renovated into a campus for kindergarten through second grade. "It's a pretty big task. We will have demolition crews chasing us out of the building."
A lot of old furniture and other equipment will be available to other schools and non-profit organizations on May 23. On May 24, furnishings are available to the general public, and on May 25, they will be recycled, Zwisler said.
"That will help us get rid of a lot of stuff we're not going to be using," Zwisler said. The town of Silverton is taking the modular building at BES by May 28.

Pediatric Partners of Durango has applied for grants to help open a new pediatric clinic, possibly in the old primary school building in downtown Bayfield.
The medical practice is partnering with San Juan Basin Health Public Health to apply for the grants from the Colorado Health Foundation and Rocky Mountain Health Foundation.
Dr. Kim Caruso presented an update on the idea at the meeting.
Pediatric Partners hopes to hear decisions about the grants within four to six weeks, Caruso said.
Leon Hanhardt, the BHS principal, asked if mental health services might be available.
The clinic can provide referrals to mental health providers, and possibly could provide access via a telemedicine link to a pediatric psychiatrist in Denver, Caruso said,
In the personnel agenda, the board approved hiring six teachers in the district, and accepted the resignation of one teacher.
Board members also approved changes to the BMS and BHS handbooks for the 2018-2019 school year.
Mary Rubadeau, the interim superintendent, reported on collaborations with the school district with the Pine River Garden Club and La Plata Family Center. The family center will have its summer camp program staring May 22 at the old primary school campus.
The board's next work session is set for May 8.
At the end of the meeting, Peggy Whiteman, the newest member elected to the board, announced she will have to resign her seat in May or June due to her husband's relocation for work. Board president Janie Hoover said the board will handle finding her replacement in the near future.
