After a tough four-game league losing skid, the Bayfield High School boys basketball team finished the regular season with a win.
The Wolverines hosted the Pagosa Springs Pirates on Friday evening and earned a 65-42 win on senior night, as all seven BHS seniors scored at least a point and combined for 62 of the team’s 65 points.
Turner Kennedy scored 18 for the Wolverines. Hayden Farmer added 16, and Keyon Prior scored 15 points.
The Wolverines raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and led 15-8 after the opening eight minutes, as Farmer delivered seven early points. Kennedy then added nine points in the second quarter to push the Wolverines’ lead to 34-15 at the break.
BHS made seven 3-point shots in the win, as Farmer, Kennedy and Prior had two each.
Pagosa Springs (9-9, 3-6 Intermountain League) was led by the 16 points from Mason Snarr. Mitch Lewis added 13 points in the loss.
Bayfield, the defending Class 3A state champion, finished the regular season 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the Intermountain League to finish second behind Centauri (16-3, 8-2 IML). BHS will look to face Centauri in the league tournament championship game, though the competition will be fierce with Alamosa (10-9, 5-5 IML) and Montezuma-Cortez (13-5, 5-5 IML) also in the midst of strong seasons. This year, the league tournament will be held in Cortez.

Girls BasketballThe growth of the young Bayfield High School girls basketball team was on display again Friday afternoon inside the BHS gymnasium.
The Wolverines (7-12, 3-7 IML) hung tough with third-ranked Pagosa Springs (16-2, 10-0 IML) behind 10 points from Macee Shultz and eight each from Tymbree Florian and Brooke Merchant.
Still, the mighty Pirates were too much for BHS, as Hailey Griego scored 16 points, Devin Wilson added 14 and Elsa Lindner added nine to help the Pirates wrap up the IML championship.
Wilson hit three 3s in the second and third quarters to keep the Wolverines at distance.
The win was a big improvement from Bayfield’s 57-21 loss Jan. 25 at Pagosa Springs
Pagosa finished two games ahead of Alamosa for the league title, while Bayfield finished fourth and three games back of third-place Centauri.
The IML tournament will be held next week at Montezuma-Cortez.
