Bayfield soccer burned by buzzsaw in No. 1 Pagosa Springs

No. 1 Pagosa Springs a tough match

The Bayfield boys soccer team ran into a dominant force Tuesday.

Pagosa Springs (5-0, 3-0 3A Region 5) brought its No. 1-ranked Class 3A program into Wolverine Country Stadium and secured a 10-0 victory against Bayfield High School (0-3, 0-3 3A Region 5).

“We played a very physical team in Pagosa Springs. They are fast and physical, and they didn’t give us much time to possess the ball,” BHS head coach Dave Foster said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Foster estimated his goalkeeper Chad Winkler made 22 to 23 saves in the match. He also was pleased with the play of Jack Ferguson and Alex Knight in the midfield.

“We saw good things out of our outside midfielders, and keeper made good saves in very wet conditions,” Foster said. “But Pagosa had us on our heels.”

Foster also commended the play of defender Jaden Vitagliano.

“His speed helped shut down their quick forwards. He really stepped up, challenging the ball and doing everything he could to slow them down,” Foster said.

Bayfield will stay at home for a 4 p.m. match Friday against Rye.

“We know some things we will improve on, and we will regroup to play Friday and Saturday this week,” Foster said.
