Wolverines rout Firebirds in opener

The Bayfield boys soccer team ventured to northern Colorado over the weekend and was reminded just how quickly fortunes can change, returning with one win and one loss inked into their 2022 ledger.

Freshman Ayden Casillas made his prep-level debut with a three-goal hat trick in the Wolverines’ season opener Friday afternoon at Windsor Charter Academy, helping 3A BHS flog the 2A Firebirds, 5-1. Senior Shaw Foster scored once while classmate Gavin Larson also ripped a shot off a WCA player and into the opponents’ net.

Three Bayfield goals came during the first half, and two after intermission.

Senior newcomer Kaedon Rademacher earned the victory in net, allowing a Liam Maxey score head coach Chris Zoltowski reported was effectively hidden from view until nothing could be done to stop it.

“The only goal against was a free kick outside the 18,” Zoltowski said en route to the next morning’s match in Severance, just north of Windsor. “The guys made a cheeky little low corner shot that Kaedon didn’t see until it was too late.”

“Rademacher showed up,” he continued. “He made a statement (that) he wants keeper-of-the-year.”

Unfortunately, Severance humbled each and every Wolverine on Saturday.

Leading by a goal at halftime, the nonleague 3A Silver Knights exploded for eight more after the break and prevailed 9-nil with senior Phillip Vigil earning the win in net over Rademacher.

No fewer than seven players recorded at least one goal for Severance in the side’s season-opening shutout.
