Bayfield sweeps Pagosa Springs 3-0

BHS recovers on road from home heartbreakers

Senior K’Lee Stuffelbeam-Jolly’s team-high eight kills and .429 hitting, supported by five kills each from classmates Kenasea Byrd and Kaydence Hunter, helped Bayfield get back on track Tuesday after two hard-fought home losses.

Sophomore Christiana Sutherlin downed four kills as setters Bailey Martinez (14 assists) and Tanna Owens (10) directed BHS to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 victory at Pagosa Springs on Tuesday.

Coming not long after a 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 10-15 defeat on the Oct. 7 against Alamosa, then a 23-25, 25-21, 15-25, 22-25 setback the next afternoon against Centauri, the sweep lifted the Lady Wolverines to 7-10 overall, 4-4 in the 3A Intermountain League.

Senior Myrah Abdallah-Boehm came up with 17 digs defensively. Stuffelbeam-Jolly logged two solo and two assisted blocks. Martinez and fellow seniors Kody Rey and Kori Jenkins each totaled seven digs, while junior Allia Connell added on three blocks and Byrd two.

Dealt their fourth consecutive three-game defeat, PSHS (8-6, 2-4 IML) had will next visit CHS on Saturday.

Bayfield will see action Tuesday at 4A Durango (13-4, 7-1 4A/5A Southwestern), with the Demons – an “Others Receiving Votes“ inclusion in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll. DHS most recently had a three-game winning streak snapped 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 10-15 Tuesday at red-hot Delta (14-2, 6-0 3A Western Slope). Winners of 10 straight, Class 3A’s top ORV team (BHS and PSHS were low on the list), will visit No. 7-ranked Alamosa – standing 11-5 overall and an IML-best 7-1 before facing 4A Pueblo South.

IGNACIO SET FOR SATURDAY: Third-highest in Class 2A’s ORV category, Ignacio (11-7 overall, 7-1 2A/1A San Juan Basin, 5-1 2A SJBL) will resume work Saturday at Telluride (7-11, 2-5, 2-3), then host Pagosa Springs on Tuesday.

Surely well-rested, the Volleycats have been competition-idle since stunning Nucla (14-5, 5-2, 1-1 1A SJBL) 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 on Oct. 8 inside IHS Gymnasium for their fifth consecutive conquest.

Senior Harmony Reynolds and junior Solymar Cosio each smashed nine kills against the Lady Mustangs, and sophomore Marissa Olguin cracked eight as senior setter Laci Brunson racked up 26 assists. Reynolds and junior Kacey Brown each totaled 12 digs defensively while Olguin and Maci Barnes each contributed nine, and Cosio posted three solo blocks plus aided on a fourth.

Brunson tallied eight digs and also served four aces, trailing only senior Trinity Strohl’s five.
