An undefeated record against the state of Colorado and an 11-game winning streak set up the Bayfield High School baseball team to host the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A District 4 tournament.
The fifth-seeded Wolverines will play No. 28 La Junta at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bayfield Middle School. No. 12 University will face No. 21 Olathe at 12:30 p.m. in the district’s other game Saturday in Bayfield.
The winners of those games will meet at 3 p.m. for the district championship and a trip to state.
BHS (16-3) is hitting .424 with 13 home runs this season.
Zane Phelps leads the Wolverines with a .575 average, seven home runs and 37 runs batted in. His 37 RBIs lead Class 3A, and his seven home runs are tied for first in 3A.
The Wolverines’ pitching staff has compiled a 2.51 earned-run average as a staff with 115 strikeouts.
Matthew Knickerbocker and Trey Lange both have five wins for BHS.
La Junta (9-10) will counter with a .323 team average. The Tigers only have hit one home run all season. Their pitching staff, however, does boast a 2.58 staff ERA and 157 strikeouts.
The Wolverines are no stranger to the postseason. They advanced to the state tournament last season after cruising through districts.
La Junta also advanced to the state tournament in 2013, but the Tigers lost six seniors to graduation.
